Tarucus balkanicus (Freyer, 1844])

Range: N Africa, Balkan Peninsula, Asia Minor to C Asia.

Distribution in Bulgaria: The hottest lowland regions, most widespread in the SW: Petritch-Sandanski kettle and Struma valley N to Struma valley. Also found in the foothills and warmest river valleys of Rhodopi and in the vicinity of Sliven. Below ca. 500 m a.s.l.

Habitat: Hot, dry rocky places with the larval host-plant.

Bionomics: Two generations from April to July. Larval host-plant: Paliurus spina-christi (Rhamnaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: Needs clarification. Its Bulgarian range is very small and its populations relatively small; the one in Kresna gorge is threatened by habitat loss due to planned highway construction. IUCN category: Data Deficient, possibly Vulnerable.
