Leptotes pirithous (Linnaeus, 1767)

Range: N Africa; tropical, subtropical and partly temperate (as a migrant) W Eurasia.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Probably does not have permanent popuations here - although it breeds regularly in suitable habitats, presumably it cannot survive winter in Bulgaria. This migrant may be found almost anywhere in the country, so far I have recorded it from sea level up to 1600 m.

Habitat: Warm dry, often rocky places: bushy glades, fringes of oak forests, roadsides, ruderal wasteland in agricultural areas, river valleys, mountain slopes, etc.

Bionomics: In Bulgaria occurs from May to October, particularly common in mid- to late summer. Number of generations unknown. Larval host-plants: mainly various Fabaceae, but also recorded to use plants of the Rosaceae, Caprifoliaceae and Oleaceae (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: This species is sporadic, but common towards late summer. Of no concern, as it is probably not a permanent resident of the country. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
