Nymphalis l-album (Esper, 1781)
Name in Tolman & Lewington (1997): Nymphalis vau-album

Nomenclature: The species name more commonly used nowadays is vaualbum [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, even though it is a nomen nudum and the use of the name l-album was proposed instead. Currently both names are used and due to the lack of consensus the problem should be resolved by a formal decision of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature.

Range: Eurasia from E Europe to Japan and North America. Sporadic and generally very rare in its westernmost range.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Only two specimens are known so far, from downtown Sofia (the park 'Borisova Gradina') and W Stara Planina (Sveti Nikola mountain pass).

Habitat: Deciduous or mixed woodland.

Bionomics: One generation appearing in June-July, hibernates and flies again next sping. Larval host-plants: Salix and Populus (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: Unknown. The question whether this species has breeding populations in Bulgaria at present invites further studies. IUCN category: Data Deficient.
