Nymphalis egea (Cramer, [1775])
Name in Tolman & Lewington (1997): Polygonum [sic: recte Polygonia !] egea

Range: S France, Italy, S and C Balkan Peninsula, Caucasus, Asia from Turkey to NW India.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Very local and rare in the hottest regions, almost entirely S of Stara Planina range. Known from the warmest river valleys of Rhodopi and Rila, the foothills of Belasitsa near Petrich town, Struma valley (Kresna gorge), Stara Planina: Sliven, Kaloferski Manastir and the Iskar gorge; from 100 to ca. 800 m a.s.l.

Habitat: Hot rocky slopes, usually in river valleys.

Bionomics: Two generations from June till October, the adults of the last generation hibernate and reappear next spring. Larval host-plant: Parietaria officinalis (Urticaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: Requires further studies. This species has a restricted distribution in Bulgaria and its populations are typically small. The one in Kresna gorge is threatened by plans to build a highway through the gorge. IUCN category: Data Deficient, possibly Vulnerable.
