Name in Tolman & Lewington (1997): Ochlodes venatus faunus
Taxonomy: European sources still refer to this widespread species as “Ochlodes venatus”. However, this is a different species restricted to the Far East, where it occurs together with the widespread Eurasian taxon (Korshunov & Gorbunov 1995; Chiba & Tsukiyama 1996). The oldest available name for our taxon is sylvanus (Esper, [1777]).
Range: Temperate Eurasia.
Distribution in Bulgaria: The whole country up to 1600 m a.s.l.
Habitat: Diverse grassy places, typically sheltered by woodland.
Bionomics: One generation from June to August. Larval host-plants: various grasses (Poaceae).
Conservation status: One of the most widespread and common species in Bulgaria. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
