Hipparchia syriaca (Staudinger, 1871)

Systematics: This and the previous species are very similar externally and in older Bulgarian sources both are reported as "fagi".

Range: The Balkan Peninsula N to S Romania, some Aegean islands, Turkey, the Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Widespread, though local, in the hottest regions of S Bulgaria, reaching N to Varna along the Black Sea coast. From sea level up to 1200 m (observed S. Beshkov, in Abadjiev 2001). In many places occurs together with the closely similar Hipparchia fagi, with which it can be confused.

Habitat: Hot bushy and/or rocky places in or near deciduous woodland containing oak.

Bionomics: One generation from June till September. Larval host-plants: unknown, apparently grasses (Poaceae).

Conservation status: Relatively widespread and with stable and often large populations, not threatened. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
