Boloria pales ([Schiffermüller], 1775)
Range: Endemic to Europe, occurs in the Pyrenees, Alps, Carpathians and the highest mountains of W and C Balkan Peninsula.
Distribution in Bulgaria: Rila and N Pirin between 2000 and 2800 m a.s.l.
Habitat: Dry or moist grassy, sometimes stony upper subalpine and alpine habitats.
Bionomics: One generation flying in July and August. Larval host-plants: Viola (Tolman & Lewington 1997).
Conservation status: This species, although not directly threatened, is of high conservation interest owing to its restricted Bulgarian as well as total range. IUCN category: Vulnerable. Its inclusion into the Red Data Book of Bulgaria is herewith recommended.
