Melanargia larissa (Geyer, [1828])

Range: From the Balkan Peninsula and Turkey to Transcaucasia and N Iran.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Local in the hottest regions from sea level to ca. 1000 m, but I have observed specimens at almost 2000 m. Known from Struma valley N to Zemen gorge, Stara Planina (Iskar gorge, environs of Sliven), Pirin, Alibotush and Rhodopi.

Habitat: Hot rocky and/or bushy places, usually in calcareous terrain.

Bionomics: One generation from June till August. Larval host-plants: unknown, apparently grasses (Poaceae).

Conservation status: Very local, needs further research. Some important habitats, e.g. Kresna gorge, are threatened by planned construction projects. IUCN category: Data Deficient, possibly Lower risk, near threatened.
