Hyponephele lupina (Costa, [1836])

Systematics: Formerly this species was considered a form of the somewhat similar Hyponephele lycaon.

Range: N Africa, S Europe, W and C Asia.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Local in the hottest S regions from sea level to ca. 1500 m; mostly in Struma valley and S Black Sea coast incl. Strandzha, single finds also in Sakar, Rila, Stara Planina and Rhodopi (Abadjiev 2001).

Habitat: Hot rocky bushy places.

Bionomics: One generation from May till August. Larval host-plants: evidently grasses (Poaceae).

Conservation status: Very local and typically rare, needs further research. Some of the most important habitats of the species, e.g. the Kresna gorge and the s Black Sea coast, are currently under threat by extensive construction. IUCN category: Data Deficient.
