Hipparchia semele (Linnaeus, 1758)
Systematics: See the previous species. Due to the situation described there, many records of this species from S Bulgaria, especially the older ones, cannot be accepted as valid without confirmation.
Range: Endemic to Europe: occurs from Spain E to the Balkan Peninsula and W Russia, and N to the coast of Fennoscandia.
Distribution in Bulgaria: Hilly lowlands in N Bulgaria, S of Stara Planina mostly in mountains up to 1800 m a.s.l.
Habitat: Dry grassy, rocky and/or sandy places in deciduous, mixed or coniferous (pine) forests or their vicinity; sunny bushy rocky slopes.
Bionomics: One generation from June to August. Larval host-plants: grasses (Poaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).
Conservation status: Relatively widespread in Bulgaria. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
