Hipparchia orestes (De Prins & van der Poorten, 1981)

Name in Tolman & Lewington (1997): Pseudochazara orestes

Range: Endemic to the Balkan Peninsula, restricted to a very small area in NE Greece and SW Bulgaria.

Distribution in Bulgaria: One male was caught in the late 1980愀 in S Pirin but further details are unknown. Later this species was found in the first Bulgarian locality of Euchloe penia discovered by myself: the S-facing marble slopes between Paril and Nova Lovtcha villages at 700-900 m a.s.l. in S Pirin (Abadjiev 1993). The species has not been recorded again from that locality since 1994 when I found it there. However, recently it has been discovered in further localities in S Pirin.

Habitat: Dry, rocky and bushy marble slopes with sparse grassy vegetation.

Bionomics: One generation in late June and July. Larval host-plants: grasses (Poaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: A remarkable Balkan endemic with a very small Bulgarian as well as overall range. Further research on its distribution and population dynamics in Bulgaria are necessary. IUCN category: Vulnerable. Its inclusion into the Red Data Book of Bulgaria and protection by law are herewith recommended.
