Erebia ottomana Herrich-Schäffer, [1847]
Systematics: Belongs to the systematically challenging group of Erebia tyndarus, under which name it is known in older Bulgarian literature. Range: Most widespread in the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula, with widely isolated populations in France, Italy and Turkey.
Distribution in Bulgaria: Widespread in Stara Planina, Rila, Pirin, Osogovo, Alibotush and W Rhodopi between 1400 (rarely lower) and 2300 m a.s.l. Curiously, absent from Vitosha, which offers superficially suitable habitats for this species (see also Coenonympha rhodopensis).
Habitat: Glades, meadows and bogs in or near coniferous forests, grassy subalpine slopes and ridge crests.
Bionomics: One generation from late June to August. Larval host-plants: grasses (Poaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).
Conservation status: A common and relatively widespread species of higher Bulgarian mountains, but of conservation concern in view of its restricted overall range. IUCN category: Lower risk, near threatened.
