Boloria eunomia (Esper, 1800)

Distribution in Bulgaria: So far only known from the subalpine zone of C Stara Planina at 1600-2200 m a.s.l. (Beshkov 1995). Evidently occurs also in W Stara Planina, as it has just been found in the Serbian part of this range (observed by Milan Djuric).
Habitat: Moist grassy slopes.
Bionomics: One generation flying mostly in July. Larval host-plant: Polygonum bistorta (Tolman & Lewington 1997).
Conservation status: In Bulgaria this species occurs in a very limited area at the southernmost limit of its European range. Thus it is of high conservation interest, although probably not directly threatened at present. IUCN category: Vulnerable. Its inclusion into the Red Data Book of Bulgaria is herewith recommended.
